Covishield and Covaxin are two homegrown or Made in India vaccines to protect India from getting effected by COVID-19.
Who developed vaccines?
Covishield is developed by Oxford University- Astrazeneca.
It has been produced and marketed as ‘Covishield’ by Pune-based vaccine conglomerate, Serum Institute of India (SII).
And Covaxin is first fully developed vaccine made by Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech.
Why did they get approval?
Covishield and Covaxin are both front runner Made in India vaccines and they both have been granted approvals on emergent basis.
According to Dr. Rahul Pandit, Director – Critical Care, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai and the Member of Maharashtra’s COVID-19 task force, the approvals are safe and in the interest of people’s wellbeing.
How do these vaccines help?
Covishield or AZD-1222 helps in preparing antibodies to evade out the infection.
And Covaxin inactivates the virus’s ability to replicate but sustain its life so that the immune system could mount a sufficient response when it recognizes an attack on body in future. It’s ability to inactivate makes it safe and reliable vaccine.
Which vaccine is best?
Both Covishield and Covaxin are found to be effective in rooting out the virus.
However as per the principal investigators , Covishield has found to be effective, spike antibodies and fulfill the purpose of vaccination against COVID-19 in varied age-groups.
Are there any side-effects?
Global frontrunners such as Pfizer and Moderna are reported to have adverse reactions whereas Covishield and Covaxin are certified as safe and side-effect free vaccines. However, some reactions such as mild fever, pain , swelling are common in any type of vaccination.
How much do they cost?
Both vaccines are cheaper and affordable as compared to competitors .
Covishield is likely to cost Rs 250-400. And Covaxin could cost lesser than Rs 200.
Both vaccines are domestically manufactured and do not require any special storage.
